In the Chicago metropolitan area, there’s an abundance of improv, magic and comedy acts, however, there's a scarcity of live hypnosis shows. Actually, that's the case in most of the country. An encounter with a live hypnosis show is about as rare as one with extraterrestrials. Yet, pop culture media regularly exposes the public to hypnosis as a plot device in films, TV shows, books, cartoons, comics and video games (by one estimate, 8,340 times and counting).
I’m Mister Vibe, a certified, professional hypnotist, and I perform this unique, interactive, group participation form of entertainment at events both large and small in the Chicago area. FYI, unlike fictitious depictions of hypnosis, you can’t be hypnotized against your will. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. It’s you willingly concentrating the power of your mind and following suggestions, so you can’t be made to do anything you wouldn’t want to do. Though it may appear supernatural, hypnosis is a natural state of mind like "spacing out" or daydreaming. You can’t get "stuck" in it. You're not unconscious and are aware of what's going on around you. While not asleep, you feel extremely relaxed.
A common opinion about hypnosis is that people say they don't "believe" in it, as if it weren't a real thing. I can assure you that it is as real as gravity. Unfortunately, the credibility of hypnosis is constantly being undermined by magicians invading the profession in search of a new revenue stream and to escape from performing kid shows.
These magician/hypnotists will use tricks to pad out the length of a show to compensate for their feeble hypnotic ability. They'll do a hokey hypnosis themed magic show without actually doing any hypnosis. Something is made to disappear and they say you've been "hypnotized" that it vanished. A magician will tell people to close their eyes for a while and when they open them, ask "Do you feel more relaxed?" That's hypnosis." That's BS.
It's just a natural response to closing your eyes and blocking out visual stimulus. Or they'll suggest "you'll laugh when you open your eyes," attributing nervous giggling to "hypnosis." There's a shameless performer who fools audiences into believing hypnotized people can read a word in a language they don't know using cards designed to create an optical illusion so an English word is seen up close and looks like a foreign word at a distance. This trick is a ridiculous misrepresentation of real hypnotic phenomena! (The trick is called "Chris Philpott's Babel.")
Magicians make a mockery of hypnosis. They're insecure and terrified of REAL hypnosis because it's not a fail-safe trick with a "ta-da" conclusion. These professional liars delight in duping people with "pseudo hypnosis" rather than doing the real thing. Sadly, magicians performing hypnosis with deceptions just reinforces the belief that it's fake.
I am NOT a magician and have never been one. The hypnosis I perform is 100% REAL, not a trick. That's a very BIG difference! I'll entertain you with more memorable, mind-boggling FUN than you can imagine!
